Town of Blackfalds Tax Rate Bylaw Approved

Blackfalds, Alberta (April 29, 2026)  Council gave second and third reading of the Property Tax Rate Bylaw 1352.26 at the April 28 Regular Council Meeting, finalizing a 2.20% tax increase for Blackfalds residents.

This increase follows the approval of the $39,003,535 operating budget approval on March 10, 2026. Through deliberations and workshops, Council and Administration worked together to lower the initial tax increase of $10.77 per month for an average home to $5.40 per month.

Residents will also see an additional increase, roughly $8.17/month based on the average assessment value, related to the provincial Education Property Tax requisition, which has risen by 14% in 2026, to fund school operations.

Under provincial regulation, the Town of Blackfalds is required to collect both the Education Property Tax requisition as well as the Seniors Requisition on behalf of the province, and does not set the rates, shared Director of Corporate Services Justin de Bresser.

“Out of every dollar we collect from residents, we send almost 26% to the province for education, 0.6% for seniors requisition, and we save around 74% for municipal operations,” he said.

Property Tax notices will be sent out during the first week of May, along with a 2026 Alberta School Requisition facts and information insert.

Mayor Laura Svab took a moment during the Council meeting to thank Administration for the effort put into the budget process, adding later that it is a fiscally responsible increase meant to sustain the current service levels, while supporting growth.

“I want to thank Administration on the work [they’ve] done preparing this bylaw. We recognize that a tax increase is necessary to sustain growth and address rising costs, but it’s also important to keep the tax increase lower and more affordable for residents,” Mayor Svab added. “We’d like to emphasise that the provincial increases will be a large portion of the overall increase.”

Residents can expect to see not only their property assessments, but other educational proponents meant to explain municipal/provincial tax requirements.
