Town of Blackfalds Kicks Off Municipal Development Plan Review
Blackfalds, Alberta (May 1, 2026) – The Town of Blackfalds Planning & Development Department is embarking on updating the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) which was first adopted by Council in August 2009.
An MDP is a high-level, long-range planning document that sets the vision, goals, and policies for how a municipality will grow and develop over a 20–30-year period. The plans ensure orderly, sustainable, and financially responsible growth within the community, and provide predictability for residents, developers, and decision makers. It helps the Town plan for sustainable growth, protect natural areas, support economic development, and coordinate land use.
Since the Town’s current MDP’s implementation almost two decades ago, Blackfalds has grown exponentially, and this timely project ensures that the MDP accurately reflects the community vision now and into the future.
“As the MDP review will all be done in-house by Town Staff, the MDP review has been divided into several phases, to be executed over multiple years to ensure that we are doing our due diligence not only with engaging the community, but also gathering feedback from all our community partners,” explained Planning & Development Manager Jolene Tejkl.
The Town of Blackfalds has launched a project page for the MDP Review, where interested parties can find all information related to the MDP. Please visit www.blackfalds.ca/mdpreview to see engagement/feedback opportunities, news, timeline breakdowns and more.
Mayor Laura Svab added her appreciation of the Planning and Development Department for taking on this multi-year project and is looking forward to engaging with the community.
“Council knows that the updated MDP will create a solid foundation for how the Town moves forward, and I am looking forward to hearing the feedback that will come from upcoming community engagement,” shared Mayor Laura Svab. “As our community continues to grow, having input from our residents, businesses, and organizations is an incredibly important step.”
To begin the MDP review, the Town is proposing a refreshed
Vision Statement, which will provide a particularly important reference point
for the development of the goals, objectives, and policy direction in the new
MDP. The Town is asking for feedback on the proposed Vision Statement via
public survey, which is now available at www.blackfalds.ca/mdpreview,
with submissions due by May 29.
